WHO Launches Global Clinical Trials Forum to Strengthen Research Infrastructure

Summary: The GCTF is a WHO-managed initiative established to support the implementation of World Health Assembly Resolution WHA75.8, which calls for the strengthening of clinical trials to provide high-quality evidence on health interventions. The forum brings together a diverse group of stakeholders, including national health authorities, regulatory bodies, ethics committees, research institutions, funders, and patient organizations, to foster collaboration and share best practices in clinical trial design, conduct, and oversight.

A key component of the GCTF is the Global Action Plan for Clinical Trial Ecosystem Strengthening (GAP-CTS), which outlines nine priority action areas to address barriers in current clinical trial ecosystems. These areas include improving trial readiness, enhancing patient and community engagement, advancing digital infrastructure, and promoting equity and inclusion in clinical research.

The forum aims to create a sustainable and coordinated global clinical trial network that ensures the generation of reliable evidence to inform health policies and improve public health outcomes.
