Summary:
The initiative aims to position the UK as a global leader in regulating medicines produced in microgravity environments, where conditions such as reduced gravity can enable the formation of more uniform protein crystals and potentially improve the effectiveness and delivery of some medicines. The pathway will support companies exploring the manufacture of pharmaceuticals in orbit by providing a clear regulatory framework for testing, approval and quality assurance. The government states that this approach could help accelerate the development of innovative treatments, including more concentrated formulations of complex medicines that may be easier for patients to administer. The programme forms part of wider efforts to strengthen the UK’s space and life sciences sectors and encourage investment in advanced manufacturing technologies.
