Professor Alastair Denniston: The future regulation of AI in healthcare

Summary: In this MHRA strategy blog, Professor Alastair Denniston describes AI as the “X-ray moment” of our time, with the potential to transform diagnosis, treatment and how patients make decisions about their care. He argues that regulation must balance innovation with protection, framing three guiding principles for a new regulatory model: Safe – regulation should be proportionate to risk, recognising that failing to innovate can also harm patients; Fast – approvals and adoption pathways must be as rapid and frictionless as possible to avoid delaying beneficial technologies; and Trusted – patients and professionals need confidence that AI tools are rigorously assessed, transparently monitored and can keep pace with rapid technological change. The blog also highlights the role of the new National Commission on the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, which Denniston chairs, and invites a national call for evidence so the public and professionals can help shape the future framework.
