New MHRA-supported research reveals patterns of vaccine-derived poliovirus spread
Summary: MHRA-supported research has analysed nearly 4,000 cases of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 across 39 countries, revealing that the virus typically spreads between neighbouring countries at around 2.3 km per day. Although most outbreaks remain small, some have expanded across multiple nations. The study shows that international borders — often reflecting differences in vaccination coverage — can slow the virus’s movement. These findings will help public-health bodies better predict outbreak paths and strengthen vaccination and surveillance strategies.
