Summary: The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has provided an update on the PATHWAYS clinical trial, a UK-wide study investigating the effects of puberty-suppressing medication in children and young people with gender incongruence. Following concerns raised earlier in 2026, the trial was paused while the protocol underwent further review. MHRA has now agreed a revised protocol that includes strengthened safeguards, clearer monitoring arrangements and minimum age requirements for participants. The regulator emphasised that participant safety and wellbeing remain its highest priority and confirmed that the updated trial design meets the required regulatory standards. Recruitment is not expected to begin before 1st August 2026 due to ongoing legal proceedings. The study aims to generate much-needed evidence on the benefits and risks of puberty blockers, including their impact on mental health, physical development, cognitive function and quality of life.
