Summary (including link): The UK is taking steps to support the development and manufacture of innovative medicines in space, with the MHRA and UK Space Agency publishing the first dedicated regulatory pathway for space-manufactured medicines and setting out a coordinated approach to in-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing. The work aims to give companies clearer expectations on how existing UK regulatory frameworks apply to production in microgravity, including Good Manufacturing Practice and distribution requirements, with a collaborative regulatory roadmap due in autumn 2026. The blog highlights the potential for microgravity to improve drug formulations, protein crystal quality, personalised therapies and Earth-based manufacturing, while positioning the UK to help shape international standards in this emerging sector.
