Summary: Following a detailed scientific review, the MHRA has confirmed that UK-sourced plasma can now be used to manufacture five further plasma-derived medicinal products: fibrinogen, prothrombin complex concentrates (PCCs), C1 esterase inhibitor, Factor X and Protein C. The review concluded that, based on current epidemiology, manufacturing processes, existing safety measures and expert advice, the additional risk of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is considered negligible. This decision builds on previous approvals for immunoglobulins and albumin, further strengthening the UK's ability to produce essential plasma-derived medicines from domestic donations while maintaining robust donor screening, leucodepletion, traceability and other established safety controls.
