MHRA Designated as WHO-Listed Authority: A Milestone for UK Life Sciences and Global Health
On 8th August 2025, the World Health Organisation (WHO) officially recognised the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a WHO-Listed Authority (WLA). This designation places the MHRA among a select group of 39 global regulatory bodies, including Health Canada and Japan’s MHLW/PMDA, affirming its adherence to stringent international standards in medical product regulation. The WLA status supports the UK's strategic objectives outlined in the Life Sciences Sector Plan and the 10-Year Health Plan for England, facilitating faster and broader access to quality-assured medical products, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. MHRA Chief Executive Lawrence Tallon emphasised that this recognition underscores the agency's commitment to regulatory excellence, innovation, and global collaboration.
