Summary: The MHRA and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust have launched the Manchester Sandbox, a programme designed to test promising healthcare technologies with patients and clinicians in real-world NHS environments. Initial technologies are expected to include AI-enabled medical devices, such as tools for identifying patients at greater risk of complications from long-term conditions. The sandbox will generate evidence on safety, effectiveness and impact, while exploring proportionate, lifecycle-based regulatory approaches. Findings will be shared across the NHS to support wider adoption of successful technologies and help developers better understand the evidence required for NHS use. The MHRA will also invite expressions of interest from medical device developers for the programme’s next phase.
