Independent Commission sets out blueprint for safe AI adoption in healthcare

Summary: The National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare has published recommendations for strengthening the UK’s approach to AI regulation, following engagement with more than 12,000 patients, members of the public, clinicians, healthcare leaders and technology developers. Proposals include staged authorisations for new AI models, allowing controlled real-world deployment before fuller approval; continuous monitoring of AI-enabled medical devices throughout their lifecycle; accessible public information on device safety and adverse incidents; and stronger MHRA enforcement powers. The Commission also emphasises meaningful human oversight and ensuring patients know when AI is being used in their care. The Government and MHRA will now consider the recommendations before issuing a formal response.
